Packaging Guides

Cable Tie Size Guide for Packing, Workshop and Storage Jobs

by Boxy Packaging on Oct 06, 2026
Black, white and coloured cable ties beside a ruler, measuring tape and bundled cables on a workshop bench

Short answer: measure around the complete bundle at its widest point, then choose a cable tie whose published usable bundle range covers that measurement. Do not treat the tie's total length as its usable loop size: the locking head, engaged strap and tightening tail all use part of the length. Check width, fastening style, ratings and head clearance separately, then test one tie on the real bundle before standardising it.

This guide explains how to compare cable tie sizes for packing benches, workshops, offices and storage areas. It also maps the verified dimensions in Boxy Packaging's current cable tie range without inventing maximum bundle diameters or strength ratings that the listings do not publish.

What a cable tie size actually tells you

A cable tie is usually described by its nominal length and strap width in millimetres. Suppliers do not always write those figures in the same order. One listing may say 200 x 3 mm, while another may say 3 x 200 mm. Read the labels for length and width instead of assuming the first number always means the same thing.

Nominal length is not usable loop length

Nominal length is the tie's overall listed length before installation. The loop available around a bundle is shorter because some strap passes through the locking head and a tail is needed for tightening. Head design and minimum engagement also differ between products.

That is why a reliable manufacturer catalogue can list length, width and maximum bundle diameter as separate fields. The current HellermannTyton Australia cable ties and fixings catalogue, for example, separates those dimensions for individual part numbers. Use the exact specification for the product being considered rather than applying another brand's size chart to it.

Width is not a complete strength rating

A wider strap can change fit, handling and head size, but width alone does not establish tensile capacity, material performance or suitability for a particular environment. Those are product-specific properties that need their own published values. If a task depends on load, temperature, chemicals, fire performance, ultraviolet exposure or a standard, choose a product with the exact documented rating required for that task.

Measure the bundle before choosing a tie

Use the circumference at the widest point

Arrange the items as they will actually be bundled. Wrap a flexible metric tape around the widest point and record the circumference in millimetres. If a soft tape is unavailable, use a non-stretch piece of string, mark where it meets, then measure that length against a ruler.

Measure the finished bundle, not one cable or item on its own. Include sleeves, labels, connectors or protective material that will sit inside the loop. An irregular bundle may have a larger circumference at a plug, junction or overlapping section, so check more than one point.

Allow for engagement, grip and head clearance

The measured circumference is only the starting point. The selected tie also needs enough strap to engage correctly in its head and leave a practical tail for tightening. The head must fit beside the bundle without pressing against a connector, sharp edge, moving part or closing lid.

Boxy's current listings state total nominal length and width but do not publish maximum bundle diameter. For that reason, this guide does not convert 150 mm or 200 mm into a claimed loop capacity. Test one tie on the real bundle and stop if it only reaches by forcing the head, compressing the contents or leaving too little engagement.

Current Boxy cable tie sizes

The following details were checked against the current Shopify catalogue during preparation. Prices and availability can change, so use the linked product page for the latest purchase information.

Current option Listed nominal size Style and current pack choices Useful comparison point
Coloured nylon cable ties 150 mm long x 3.6 mm wide Red, blue, yellow or green; 100 ties in the selected colour Shorter option for compact bundles and visual identification where the measured fit works.
Standard black nylon cable ties 200 mm long x 3 mm wide One-way self-locking; 100, 200, 500 or 1000 piece packs Longer, narrower option for repeat general bundling after a sample fit check.
Releasable cable ties 200 mm long x 4.8 mm wide Black or white; 100 ties per pack Designed to be opened and adjusted when a bundle needs later access.
Mountable cable ties Confirm the exact dimensions before ordering Black; 100 piece listing with a screw-mounting head Check the collection for current availability and resolve any specification differences before planning a fixed routing job.

These dimensions describe different products, not a strength ladder. The 200 x 4.8 mm releasable tie, for example, has a different closure and purpose from the 200 x 3 mm one-way tie. Choose the fastening style first, then verify that the exact size fits.

Choose by job as well as size

Packing and dispatch benches

Cable ties can group spare leads, keep matching accessories together or attach a non-critical identification tag when the product and process allow it. Coloured ties can support a simple visual system, but the colour should have a written meaning so staff do not have to guess. A tie is not carton-sealing tape, a tamper-evident security device or a replacement for approved packaging.

Keep ties and cutters in a defined position so loose pieces do not mix with active orders. The small ecommerce packing station checklist covers the wider bench layout, order separation and end-of-day reset.

Workshop cable organisation

For a static, non-critical bundle, measure the complete group and confirm that the head can sit clear of plugs, sockets and moving parts. Choose a releasable tie when regular access is expected. For machinery, vehicles, electrical installations or other regulated work, follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and applicable requirements rather than relying on a general-purpose size guide.

Storage and stock identification

For light stored items, first decide whether the bundle should be permanent or reopened. A releasable tie can suit a frequently accessed group, while colour can distinguish locations, project stages or item families. Do not use a cable tie as lifting gear, load restraint or a substitute for a rated strap, clamp or container.

Run a one-piece fit test

  1. Build the real bundle: include every item and sleeve that will sit inside the loop.
  2. Measure the widest circumference: record the value in millimetres and note any irregular section.
  3. Check the listing: confirm the exact length, width, closure type, material and any required published rating.
  4. Position the head: keep it clear of connectors, hinges, sharp edges, heat sources and moving parts.
  5. Engage the strap: feed it through the head in the intended direction and make sure there is enough tail to grip.
  6. Tighten gradually: stop when the bundle is organised without crushing, kinking or visibly marking its contents.
  7. Inspect the result: check that the head is stable, the bundle can sit or move as intended and the tie has not created a new snag point.
  8. Record the approved combination: note the exact product and bundle, not just "small" or "medium".

If the sample fails any step, use a different size or fastening method. Joining ties together changes the arrangement and should not be treated as equivalent to one correctly specified longer tie unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that method for the application.

Keep installation and trimming controlled

Pull a one-way tie only until the bundle is held as intended. Extra force is not automatically better. Soft jackets, tubes and packaged items can be marked or deformed by an overtightened strap, while a poorly positioned head can make later handling awkward.

If a tail needs trimming, use a suitable cutting tool and keep hands and nearby items clear. Inspect the trimmed end so it does not leave a sharp projection. Manufacturer ranges include dedicated tensioning and cutting tools because repeat work may require more consistent handling than hand tightening alone. HellermannTyton's current cable tie overview also distinguishes standard, releasable, coloured, fixing and application-specific options.

Cable ties do not replace proper cable routing

Bundling a lead does not make an unsafe route safe. Safe Work Australia advises arranging electrical leads so they are not run across floors, through doorways or over sharp edges, and using appropriate stands, hangers, ramps or covers where relevant. Review its current electrical risk guidance for the workplace context.

WorkSafe Queensland also identifies cables as potential walkway obstacles and lists organisers, mounting, covers, suspension and other controls as options depending on the situation. Its guidance on obstacles and trip hazards is broader than cable-tie selection. Assess the actual layout and applicable duties rather than assuming a bundled cable is adequately protected.

A practical buying checklist

  • What is the measured circumference at the bundle's widest point?
  • Does the exact product publish a usable bundle range or maximum diameter?
  • Is the listed order length x width or width x length?
  • Will the locking head fit in the available space?
  • Should the tie be one-way, releasable, coloured or mountable?
  • Does the job require a documented load, temperature, UV, chemical, fire or compliance rating?
  • Could tightening mark, crush or kink the bundled items?
  • Will the finished arrangement stay clear of walkways, doors, heat and moving parts?
  • Has one real bundle been tested before a bulk pack is ordered?

For repeat work, record the exact SKU or product name, measured bundle and approved installation method. That turns a one-off choice into a checkable workshop or packing process without pretending that one cable tie size fits every job.

Cable tie size questions

What do 3 x 200 mm cable ties mean?

For Boxy's standard black product, the verified listing means a nominal strap width of 3 mm and a nominal total length of 200 mm. The usable loop is shorter than 200 mm.

Will a 200 mm cable tie fit a 200 mm bundle circumference?

Do not assume it will. The head, strap engagement and tightening tail all use part of the total length. Use the exact product's published bundle range when available and test the real bundle.

Is a 4.8 mm cable tie stronger than a 3 mm tie?

Width alone is not enough to make that claim. Strength depends on the exact product, material, design and tested rating. Boxy's current size comparison does not assign an unpublished tensile capacity to any option.

Which size is best for colour coding?

Boxy's coloured range is listed at 150 mm long x 3.6 mm wide in red, blue, yellow or green, with 100 ties in the selected colour. Use it only where that exact size and one-way fastening style fit the bundle and job.

When should I choose a releasable cable tie?

Choose a releasable style when the bundle needs planned access, adjustment or reuse. Boxy's current releasable option is listed at 200 mm long x 4.8 mm wide in black or white, with 100 ties per pack.

Can cable ties be used as load restraint?

Do not use an unrated general-purpose cable tie as lifting gear, structural support or transport load restraint. Use equipment designed and rated for the task and follow the applicable instructions and requirements.
